UW-Berg 02/2008

Team: Manu und Peter

4 years ago I had dived quite well at my first 60m-TG. At that time we were at Baustoff Graf straight down to 60m - had to paddle a bit. Then when we had 60 on the pointer, we followed the gently rising terrain and hit what we thought was the wall there. But then at 32m we saw that it was just a UW mountain - oval shape, two "peaks" at the top, diameter 5-10m each, the mountain has an overall oval shape. Since our gas supply had already dwindled alarmingly, we began our open water ascent and came out exactly in the line of entry Baugraf - Wallhausen. On the surface we swam 10min (D12, 2 stages) back to the entry.

For a long time I wanted to go there again, but we had not found the spot again until now. But yesterday, after some thinking and searching, we finally found the UW mountain!

We went in at the campsite with scooters and rebreathers (D12 18/45, 7l 50/25, 40cuft O2), down to about 40m and left. You pass 2 dunes, the first you cross, the second you follow into the depth. You move quickly on the 50m level, which is in front of the sea mark 24. After 5-7min of scooter time the terrain starts to rise, you are moving about S-E direction, then the terrain rises a bit steeper until you get to the foot of the UW mountain. We walked around it half a time in 5 minutes - so circumference will be about 150m. It's cool when you float above the mountain, around you the wall goes down and everywhere only this mystical green-blue of Lake Constance, no shore in sight. One thinks there involuntarily of sea monsters....

When we made our way back, we dropped down the wall to 45m, and then compass course exactly north. Ev. there is a shorter route back to the wall, but we were so happy to see it again too! You scoot across the 50m level for about 4-5 minutes until the terrain rises again and merges into the wall. As a landmark you could use the big scrub at 40m. From there you swim back to the entrance campsite in about 15 minutes.

Important for this dive: compass. Possibly a buoy, if you do the dive in summer and there is shipping again. In case of emergency you should be able to do an open water ascent, because you will get some deco on your watch.
